NEUTRAL PH AND THE USE OF MARINE COSMETICS

In cosmetics, as in dermatology, the term is widely used: neutral pH. While it may seem difficult to understand, in reality it is not. You just need to know what “pH” is and then understand its importance. In this article, we tell you what it is. We will go further still, we will see why the pH of the skin must remain neutral.
What is neutral pH?
The abbreviation “pH” stands for “hydrogen potential”. Its value makes it possible to determine the nature of a medium: acidic or basic. To do this, we take the pH of the water as a reference. What is its pH? This is the value 7. So any medium with a potential hydrogen value of less than 7 is considered an acidic medium. On the other hand, for a medium whose value is greater than 7 – but necessarily less than 14 – it is basic in nature.
Skin and hair also have their pH. The hydrogen potential is between 4.5 and 6. Several factors vary it: age, skin area, level of sun exposure, etc. As an illustration, the skin of babies has a neutral pH (7). Regarding the hair, their hydrogen potential is between 4.5 and 5.5.
Why is it important for the skin to have a neutral pH?
The skin is made up of different parts, including the dermis and epidermis. The outermost part of the epidermis is covered with a hydrolipidic film that helps the skin fight against aggressions. It is the constitution of the film that determines the pH value of the skin.
It is important to have pH neutral skin for several reasons. The first is that the external elements can act on the skin. Due to external aggressions: cold, pollution, aggressive cosmetic products, etc., there is an alteration of the hydrolipidic film. This causes pH imbalance.
What are the consequences ?
They abound:
• The skin becomes oily or drier than it used to be;
• The skin becomes dehydrated or becomes more sensitive;
• The skin shows redness, pimples, irritation, etc. ;
• Dermatitis are emerging.
The best way to rebalance the skin’s pH is to use products with a neutral pH. This is where marine cosmetics come in.
The use of marine cosmetics to rebalance the pH

There are many products designed with ingredients from the sea to have skin with a neutral pH. These ingredients have rejuvenating and moisturizing properties.
Let’s talk about marine sediments or sea clays. Highly prized for its composition rich in minerals, sea clay is a classic ingredient used as a face and body mask. It has the particularity of nourishing the skin and hydrating it, while absorbing toxins, which rebalances the pH.
Rich in electrolytes and essential minerals, sea salt is used as a natural exfoliation. It does this by exfoliating the skin and getting rid of grime and dirt.
Seaweed, on the other hand, is generally used as face masks. They are cleansers and purifiers that protect and maintain the skin’s pH balance.
